It is a remarkable architectural concept, as are many of Rietveld's other chair designs.

The zigzag chair has a high seat without armrests and is made up of solid wood plates of 18 millimeters thick, glued together. The wood joints are special with all Rietveld's furniture. The connection of the seat to the leg and that of the leg to the floor plate is made of miter sawn wood and reinforced by eight bolts each and a corner lath. The chair has a seat height of 460 millimeters.

Before this construction was chosen, Rietveld investigated various other constructions. First he made a steel frame with a fiberglass seat. Then wooden slats were screwed between two steel frames. The ultimately chosen wooden corner constructions were executed in various variants. Rietveld designed various models with the zigzag motif as a starting point, including a children's chair, an armchair, a chair with armrests.
